7 Natural Tips to Get Rid of Flies in the House
Whirling, twirling, flies quickly become unbearable, landing on furniture, windows and food.
We offer you 6 natural and inexpensive tips to repel them and find calm!
1 – ERADICATE FLYING INSECTS WITH GARLIC
The smell of garlic is formidable against flies, especially when used as a repellent.
Tip: In a pot of boiling water, immerse 5 cloves of chopped garlic. Simmer for 20 minutes. Leave to cool, filter then spray everywhere in your interior.
2 – CLOVES
Flies do not like the smell of cloves. Cut citrus fruits in half or quarters, such as lemons, clementines, grapefruit or oranges. Plant a few cloves in it and spread them around your house, preferably near windows and doors, and replace them every week. This way, you will enjoy the good smell of this mixture while repelling flies out of your home.
3 – WITH ESSENTIAL OILS
Certain essential oils have a very effective insect repellent action. If they don’t work against bedbugs, they should be tested against flies in the house. This is particularly the case for peppermint, lemongrass, lavender, eucalyptus and even geranium.
To diffuse them, you can either pour a few drops into your diffuser, or, if you do not have one, into cups or dishes (to place near a window). You can also mix a few drops of essential oil with warm water and spray around the house.
Please note, always handle essential oils with care, ask for information before use and remember to ventilate the rooms of the house after vaporization/diffusion.
4 – USE PLASTIC BAGS FILLED WITH WATER
Here is an original and highly effective method to get rid of flies. It consists of filling a transparent plastic bag with water. When you hang the bag filled with water at the entrance to your house, flies will no longer enter it.
Ingredients
- 1 clear plastic bag (Freezer bags are best, as they are sturdier).
Instructions
- Fill the plastic bag with water (halfway).
- Tie a knot at the opening of the plastic bag. You can also use string or a large elastic band.
- Hang a plastic bag at all entrances to your home (front door, garage door, etc.).
5 – BAKING SODA
Another natural tip to prevent flies from inviting themselves into your home at will: using baking soda. Also called sodium bicarbonate, this economical, biodegradable and non-toxic white powder is formidable against these short-winged insects which, as a reminder, lay between 600 and 2,000 eggs during their life. To scare them away, mix baking soda with water, then spray the solution inside your home.
6 – WHITE VINEGAR
Whether for cleaning windows or your kitchen worktop, white vinegar is a real two-in-one. It cleans perfectly and it also keeps flies away.
7 – CHOOSE PLANTS TO KEEP FLIES AWAY
Plants are excellent fly repellents, but which ones?
Basil, lavender, mint, eucalyptus, and even geranium (and more particularly lemon geranium) give off strong odors that most of us appreciate but that flies hate above all else.
The trick is simple: just place the pots on the windowsill so that the flies don’t enter. In addition to repelling flies, your windows will be decorated with pretty plants!
You can also burn green tobacco leaves, on a stove or barbecue, in the places they like most.
Eucalyptus, in addition to being used as an essential oil, is also effective as an infusion. Simply infuse eucalyptus leaves in boiling water, let cool, then spray around your home or on tea towels near windows.
