What plant should be planted in the garden to scare away the worms that destroy the harvest?

By Lesia

Not all worms are good for the garden. While some allow the soil to aerate, others are quite harmful to plants, since they feed on their leaves and roots. This is the case of white bumblebee worms. To protect your garden from these pests, you can grow certain plants known for their repellent action. Find out what plant to grow in the garden to scare away the worms that destroy the harvest.

Some worms are very harmful to plants. This is particularly the case with the white bee larva. This is fond of vegetable plants with fleshy roots or tubers. In case of attack, plant growth slows down or even stops completely. The plant then turns yellow and may die. If you inspect an attacked plant, you will notice that the roots and crown are chewed or cut, especially in the case of young plants.

What plant to grow in the garden to scare away the worms that destroy the harvest?

Some flowering plants are very useful in the garden. They repel  parasites  and thus protect crops from the attack of certain insects. This is the case of calendula officinalis, also called calendula or garden marigold. This flowering plant is effective in repelling worms, but also aphids, flies and other insects that are a danger to crops. In fact, its repellent action allows it to defend itself against parasites, but also  against the plants that surround it.  You can grow it to protect your vegetable plants from worm attacks, particularly white bee worms. These particularly attack beets, carrots, potatoes and turnips. In addition to repelling white larvae, marigold flowers also have the particularity of attracting butterflies and pollinating insects, essential for the balance of the ecosystem.

Native to southern Europe, calendula is an aromatic flowering plant in the Asteraceae family. This deciduous annual plant is easy to grow. In fact,  it adapts to all soils,  even the poorest ones. Calendula fears frost and prefers a sunny location. It can even withstand heat, but on the condition that the soil remains cool.

Calendula can be planted in October or March,  for regions with a temperate climate.  On the other hand, for the northernmost regions, it should be planted  starting in April.  The most common technique for planting calendula is sowing. To do this, sow some seeds directly in the garden, in the ground, and cover the seedlings with soil. Please note that it is important to water the soil regularly to keep it fresh. After the seedlings emerge, remember  to remove fragile plants  to retain only young, vigorous shoots. During this operation, make sure to maintain an interval of 25 cm between two plants.

  • Entomophagous nematodes to fight worms

Nematodes are worms considered garden helpers. They are said to be entomophagous  because they feed on insects.  That said, they allow you to naturally fight caterpillars or beetle larvae present in the soil. To do this, you can water the soil of your garden  with an ecological product based on entomophagous nematodes,  which you can find in a garden center.
