How to Grow Cherries at Home from Seeds in a Pot
- Seed Preparation: Wash the seeds (pits) thoroughly to remove any pulp residue. Rub the dried seeds on a rough surface to lightly scrape them off.
- Cold Stratification: Place the seeds in a plastic container with a damp paper towel and put it in the refrigerator. This simulates the cold period needed for germination.
- Planting: Fill a pot with soil and sand, making sure the soil is slightly acidic and nutritious. Plant the seeds about an inch deep and cover with soil.
- Location and Soil: Cherries require plenty of sunlight and good air circulation. They prefer fertile, sandy soil with good drainage and a slightly acidic pH. The pot should be at least 8 inches deep to allow for root development.
- Special Care:
o Water only when the soil is almost dry, avoiding keeping it moist.
o Fertilize the cherry tree every spring.
o Watch for pests, as cherries are susceptible to them.
o Lightly prune the tree to encourage fruit production. - Fruit Timing and Pollination: Cherry trees can take up to 5 years to bear fruit. Make sure the flowers are pollinated by planting several plants and attracting bees if there are no other cherry trees nearby.
