Bed Bugs: Here’s How to Tell Them Apart from Fleas (And Eliminate Them)

By liliaturcin5

Bedbugs and fleas are two types of pests that can invade our homes, causing inconvenience and health problems. Although they may look similar at first glance, knowing how to differentiate them is essential to choosing the right treatment. In this article we will tell you how to distinguish bedbugs from fleas and how to get rid of them effectively. Bed Bugs Appearance: Adult bed bugs are approximately 4 to 5 mm long, have a flat, oval body, red-brown to dark brown in color. They are flat and look like small discs. Behavior: Bedbugs are mainly active at night. They hide in cracks, mattress seams, baseboards, furniture and carpets during the day. At night, they come out to feed on human blood. Bites: Bed bug bites often appear as small rashes or red bites, usually grouped together on the arms, legs, and neck. They cause itching and allergic reactions in some people. Detection: To detect bed bugs, look for physical signs such as bed bug droppings (small black or brown spots), eggs (small white specks), and nymphs (young, light-colored bed bugs). You can also use bed bug traps. Fleas Appearance: Adult fleas are approximately 1 to 3 mm long and dark brown to black in color. They have powerful hind legs that allow them to quickly jump from one host to another. Behavior: Fleas are very active and move quickly. They jump on hosts, feeding on their blood. Fleas can be found on pets, in rugs, carpets, and areas where pets spend time. Bites: Flea bites are usually small, red bites that are intensely itchy. They are often grouped around the ankles and feet. Detection: To detect fleas, look for signs of fleas on your pets, such as itching, biting or excessive licking. You can also look for adult fleas or flea droppings in areas where your pets frequent. Eliminating Bed Bugs To eliminate bed bugs, start with a thorough cleaning of your home. Wash bedding, clothing and textiles at high temperatures, vacuum all potentially infested areas, use bed bug covers on mattresses and pillows, and treat cracks and crannies with products such as than diatomaceous earth. Flea Control To eliminate fleas, treat your pets with a veterinarian-recommended flea control product. Wash their bedding and the textiles they use. Vacuum regularly and throw away the vacuum bag immediately. Use sprays and environmental treatments to eliminate fleas in your home. In summary, although bedbugs and fleas can cause similar problems, it is important to differentiate them when choosing the appropriate treatment. If you are unsure about the infestation you have, it is recommended to call a pest control professional for an accurate assessment and effective removal.
