However, there are also very simple methods with which you can get fresh vegetables quickly, in just 15 days!
Chives contain vitamin C, B vitamins, vitamin A and a series of minerals. So it’s great for your health too!
You probably don’t want that unpleasant onion smell spreading through your home, or moisture or dirt collecting on your windowsill. With this method, you won’t have to worry about any of that. You just need patience.
How to grow chives effortlessly
- Method Growing your own vegetables in bottles is simple, quick and completely worry-free.
Cut the top off a bottle, like the cap of a Coca-Cola bottle, and then cut the bottle in half.
Fill the bottom of the bottle with sawdust, toilet paper or other improvised material that can retain moisture for a long time.
Select a small onion (about the size of a quail egg) so that 5 to 7 will fit in the bottle. Cut the top of each onion (its stem) so that its flesh is visible. This helps activate oxygen and start the growth process.
Place the onions in the filling material, roots side down. Pour 50-100 g of water, cover the bottle with the other half and place it on the windowsill.
After 15-25 days, green onion shoots can reach a height of up to 30 cm. Water occasionally as needed, depending on the moisture of the fill material or the room environment. Don’t worry if the sprouts are not the same height. Eventually the others will catch up and you will have uniform green foliage :-).
- Method If you don’t want to get complicated by cutting the bottle , then growing chives in bags is very quick. It is similar to the previous method. If you’re worried about the bag breaking and leaking, simply place it on a plastic or ceramic tray.
To speed up chive development, soak onions in warm water for 2 days, changing it morning and night. This trick helps the onions sprout 10 days earlier. After soaking, dry the onions with a paper towel, place them nearby in a plastic bag with a layer of wet filling at least 2 cm thick.
Then, seal the bag with a rubber band to prevent air from escaping. Place the bag in a cool, dark place for 3 days to accelerate root growth. After 3 days, place the mini greenhouse on a bright windowsill. It is not necessary to water or fertilize the substrate during the onion growth period.
Do not open the bag until the green onions have grown. After opening the bag, check to see if the filling is dry. Do not cut off the first shoots that appear, let them grow into new clusters.
In the same way, you can also grow garlic, chives, scallions and leeks.
With these simple methods, you will not only have an abundant supply of fresh herbs during the winter, but you will also be able to enjoy them all year round. Growing chives on the window is not difficult and can be done without rot or excess moisture.
