Surprisingly simple: growing chayote at home is so easy, there are so many fruits
Here are the steps for growing chayote:
- Select the chayote fruit: Choose healthy, intact chayote fruits at the store.
- Sprout the chayote: Leave the fruit in a warm, dry place for one to two weeks until shoots emerge.
- Prepare the planting site: Choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining soil.
- Prepare the soil: Enrich the soil with organic compost or manure for fertility and moisture.
- Plant the chayote: Dig a hole, place the sprouted fruit horizontally with the shoots facing up and cover it with soil.
- Provide support (optional): Use a trellis for climbing vines to keep them off the ground.
- Watering: Keep the soil moist but not soggy, especially during dry periods.
- Fertilize: Apply a balanced fertilizer or compost every few months for healthy growth.
- Pruning: Prune vines for bushier growth and better air circulation to prevent disease.
- Harvest: Harvest the tender young fruits 4 to 6 months after planting, leaving some stem attached.
- Storage: Store harvested chayotes in a cool, dry place for several weeks to several months.
