How to grow lettuce from leftovers?

To grow your own lettuce at home without seeds, plant the bottom end of the lettuce in water. This way, you can grow infinitely from what is normally thrown away.

Growing it from seeds is easy enough, but another method is even easier. This food can also be propagated by cuttings. Try it for yourself!

Lettuce leaves

1. First, remove the largest outer leaves from the head of lettuce. Next, remove the bottom of the head of lettuce with a knife and make a clean cut about 3 cm from the bottom.

2. You have now obtained the base of the lettuce heads. Leave the leaves aside to make a delicious salad and learn how to remove fresh lettuce from the unseeded tip.

3. All you need is a bowl, glass or salad bowl to hold the entire bottom of the lettuce.

4. Pour the necessary amount of water into the container so that the base of the lettuce is submerged less than one centimeter.

5. Put the bottom of the head of lettuce in a bowl of water.

6. Place the   container   in the house near a sunny window. Therefore, it will be exposed to light in semi-shade.

7. Write the start date of this cut on the glass or bowl and remember to change the water once a day.

When and how to transfer lettuce to pots or soil?

After 15 days you can already see that the head is well developed. The first root will form and, even better, the first leaf will have formed in the center of the lettuce.

You will need to remove the outer leaves without damaging the roots. Then you can transplant lettuce into a regular round pot filled with a humus-peat mixture. Dig about two inches deep and then fill the pot with soil.

After transferring this salad essential to the pot, pour a large amount of soil over the lettuce. Enrich the soil with natural liquid fertilizers. Expose the lettuce to the sun and it will gradually grow. Growing it in pots on the balcony will be easy and you can even invite your children to this gardening experience!

When you harvest your first new lettuce, you can repeat these operations. You’ll save a lot of money by always having lettuce on hand!
