Grandma’s trick to whiten towels
Sodium silicate solution:
Sodium silicate is an inorganic compound used in the manufacture of cleaning products. With a small amount of this product, you can restore the whiteness of your towels:
- You only need 2 liters of water, 2 tablespoons (20 ml) of liquid soap and 1 tablespoon (10 grams) of sodium silicate solution. Before you start, make sure to protect yourself with a mask and gloves.
- Next, heat the water with the soap and sodium silicate solution. Once it boils, dip the towels into the mixture and let them sit for 20 minutes on low heat.
- When finished, remove them, rinse them with warm water and let them dry naturally in the sun.
White vinegar is an effective alternative:
White vinegar is known for its properties to clean, disinfect and soften fabrics, as well as to remove stains and mold. To whiten and keep your towels absorbent and soft to the touch, use this product:
- You only need 1/2 cup white vinegar (about 125 ml) and 1/4 cup detergent (60 ml).
- If you are bleaching multiple towels, add an additional half cup of vinegar and an additional quarter cup of detergent for each additional piece.
Try sunflower oil:
However, if you dare to combine this oil with detergent and bleach powder, you can obtain excellent results. The recommended quantities for each ingredient are as follows:
- c/n of Water
- 2 tbsp sunflower oil
- 2 tbsp of bleach powder
- 5 gr of Detergent (preferably organic)
Preparation method:
- Boil the water and add the 3 ingredients.
- Then, soak your towels in this solution for 2 hours.
- Afterwards, rinse them by hand (if the material is of recycled origin) or in the washing machine using the usual washing cycle.
Baking soda and its versatility:
It is well known that baking soda has powerful bleaching properties. Therefore, it is an excellent option to keep your towels always spotless, the necessary ingredients are:
- Just hot water and 1/4 cup baking soda.
Preparation method:
- For each towel you want to wash, add an additional 1/4 cup, following the same logic as with the homemade white vinegar bleaching recipe.
- Soak the towels in this solution for about an hour and then proceed to wash them in the usual washing machine cycle.
NOTE: If you are dealing with stubborn stains, you can directly apply 1 tablespoon of baking soda mixed with lemon juice and gently rub it on the dirt.
