7 Steps to Successfully Growing Purple Peppers

By Lesia
  1. Start Seeds Indoors
Timing: Start sowing 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost.
Sowing seeds: Fill the trays with the seed starting mix. Plant the seeds 1/4 inch deep.
Germination: Keep soil moist and warm (70-80°F). Seeds germinate in 7 to 14 days.
  2. Transplanting seedlings
Hardening off: Acclimate the plants outdoors for 2 weeks before transplanting.
Transplanting: Once the danger of frost has passed, transplant the seedlings (6 to 8 inches tall) 18 to 24 inches apart.
  3. Prepare the ground
Soil Quality: Use well-drained, nutrient-rich soil with a pH of 6.0 to 6.8.
Soil amendment: Mix with compost or organic fertilizer.
  4. Planting and watering
Planting depth: Plant at the same depth as in a pot. Firm ground around the base.
Watering: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Water at the base of the plants.
  5. Mulching and fertilization
Mulch: Apply 2 to 3 inches of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Fertilization: Feed with a balanced organic fertilizer every 4 to 6 weeks. Avoid excess nitrogen.
  6. Support and size
Staking: Use stakes or cages for support in windy areas.
Pruning: Cut off diseased or damaged leaves to improve air circulation.
  7. Harvesting purple peppers
Maturity: Peppers mature in 70 to 90 days. Harvest when completely purple and firm.
Harvest: Use pruning shears to cut the peppers, leaving a small stem attached. A regular harvest promotes greater fruit production.
