By Lesia

Avocado is a fruit with several properties that provides a good amount of nutrients to our meals, in addition to offering benefits for our skin and hair. It is a fruit with multiple virtues that you can always have in your refrigerator.

Although it may seem impossible, growing avocado is simple. By discovering these little tips, you can have your own plant and enjoy this fruit at home. Today, we are going to learn how to germinate it.

What you will need:

  • An avocado seed
  • A damp kitchen cloth
  • Zip-lock plastic bag
  • Glass container
  • recycled expanded polystyrene
  • Water

Step by Step:

  1. Take the avocado seed and clean it thoroughly to remove any avocado pulp. This will prevent it from rotting when it comes into contact with moisture.
  2. Wrap the seed in the damp cloth, making sure it is completely covered. It is important that the soil is moist so that the roots can germinate. Humidity and heat provide the most favorable environment for this process.
  3. Place the seed in the bag and seal it tightly.
  4. Place the bag with your seed under a stove or other warm, dark place to encourage germination.
  5. Leave it for 2-3 weeks, remembering to dampen the cloth each time it dries.
  6. When you see that the avocado seed has sprouted and the roots are long, it is a good time to remove it from the bag.
  7. Cut the Styrofoam to the size of the chosen cup diameter and also cut a smaller center circle for the seed. This will keep our seed in place, preventing it from falling into the water.
  8. Fill your glass with water.
  9. Place the polystyrene and insert the seed with its roots inside, then place it in a bright place (on a windowsill, for example).
  10. Change the water once a week.
  11. Transfer to a pot with soil (or into the garden) in spring.

Tips for growing in pots:

  • Pot size: Start with a 5 liter pot and increase to 30 liters. Transplanting will give your plant strength and allow its roots to grow freely.
  • Soil: Avocados prefer acidic soil with a pH between 5 and 7. A suitable mix is equal parts peat moss, worm compost and coconut coir, with a little perlite for good drainage.
  • Watering: Keep the soil moist, taking special care during the summer when it will need more water. Good drainage is essential as avocados do not like waterlogged soil. Stick your finger into the soil to check the moisture level.
  • Pruning: When your plant reaches its first year, it is time to make the first cut. Prune the plant to encourage horizontal growth, and the right time is when it reaches about 60 cm.

By following these tips, you can successfully grow your own avocado tree at home and enjoy the fruits it produces. You won’t need to buy avocados anymore!
