I don’t buy garlic at the store anymore. My gardener told me how to grow it in large quantities.
To plant garlic, we all know the classic method: you need to have a garden! But what if we told you that we have a much simpler technique? No more worries about the weather, soil, mulch and weeds! All you need is a clove of garlic, a glass of water and a little bit of sun. It’s up to you!
Is it possible to grow garlic indoors?
You can grow garlic perfectly as a houseplant. It is enough that:
- Your pot should be equipped with a drainage hole at the bottom.
- Your plant is placed in a bright location where it can benefit from the sun’s rays.
- Place your plant in a dry room. Garlic is afraid of excess water and humidity.
However, growing garlic at home can have some drawbacks. And it lies in the way it is grown indoors which is somewhat different. Clearly, it is impossible to expect its pods to turn into actual bulbs after just a few weeks in the ground. Sure, you can harvest garlic leaves instead, which can be chopped raw to add to salads, garnish soups, add flavor to stir-fries and enhance the taste of many recipes.
How to grow garlic in water?
If you live in an apartment or don’t have the space to grow garlic in your garden, our ingenious method is a great alternative. Follow the guide to see how to do it:
- Select the right garlic cloves: this is a necessary step, dear readers! Opt for sprouted pods (those with a little green button on top). Otherwise, you will need to take a whole bulb and cut off the pointy end with a knife.
- Prepare your container: Get a clear glass container (to monitor your plant’s germination) that can hold approximately 250 g of water.
- Separate the garlic bulbs into individual cloves: Place each clove (with its skin on) along the sides of the bowl, making sure the pointed or sprouted end is facing up.
- Add water: Fill your container with warm water, just enough to cover the bottom of your garlic clove. It’s important not to submerge them, because they can die!
- Wait a while: Place your container in a very sunny spot for about a week. But don’t forget to replenish the water if necessary. If the tops of the pods start to change color and turn brown, place your bowl out of direct sunlight for 1 or 2 days.
- Harvesting garlic sprouts: When the seedlings reach at least 8 cm in height, cut them off with scissors. That said, only take as much as you need, as these quickly lose their flavour. Also keep in mind that after the first harvest, your garlic will definitely not produce any more sprouts.
- ENJOY: With these simple steps, you can now enjoy your garlic for your culinary needs!
