Discover How to Create Homemade and Natural Air Fresheners: Healthy Alternatives for Your Home

By Lesia

There are various air freshener options available on the market today, each with long-lasting and pleasant fragrances. However, I recently discovered that most of them have a negative impact on human health, and since we have an allergic child in my family, I decided to look for healthier alternatives.

After exploring books on home care, I learned several ways to make homemade air fresheners without using harmful ingredients or spending large sums of money. I’m excited to share these ideas with you!

1. Baking Soda to Refresh Your Home:  Cleanliness and a pleasant aroma in my bathroom are essential to me. An excellent option that I discovered is baking soda, which not only eliminates unpleasant odors but also disinfects the space. Here are two effective recipes:

First option:

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1/4 cup citric acid
  • 1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide
  • A few drops of essential oil

Preparation Method: Mix baking soda, citric acid, hydrogen peroxide and vinegar in a bowl. After mixing, add a few drops of essential oil. Apply small amounts of this mixture on a piece of paper and let it dry for a few hours. Then, place the resulting tablets in the toilet cistern. When you flush the toilet, you will enjoy a pleasant aroma and a crystal-clear toilet bowl.

Second option:

  • Sodium bicarbonate
  • Citric acid
  • Essential oils

Mix baking soda and citric acid in a 1:3 ratio and add 30-40 drops of essential oil (mint, lemon, orange, etc.). Gradually add water until you get a clay-like consistency. If you wish, you can add food coloring. Form balls with the mixture and let them dry for 24 hours. These balls can be used as air fresheners in different areas of your home.

2. Natural Air Fresheners with Citrus Essence:  For this alternative, you will need baking soda, citric acid and essential oils.

Preparation Method: Combine baking soda and citric acid in a 1:3 ratio. Then, add 30-40 drops of essential oil of your choice, such as peppermint, lemon, or orange. Mix well and, if necessary, gradually add water until you get a clay-like consistency. Add food coloring if desired. The mixture should have a consistency that allows you to form balls that hold their shape. Allow the balls to dry for 24 hours before using them as natural air fresheners in your home.
