By Lesia

.Select chayote fruit: Choose healthy and defect-free chayote fruits from the store.
.Sprout the chayote: Let the fruit sit in a warm, dry place for one or two weeks until the sprouts emerge.
.Prepare the planting site: Choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-drained soil.
.Prepare the soil: Improve the soil with organic compost or manure for fertility and moisture.
.Plant the chayote: Dig a hole, place the sprouted fruit horizontally with the shoots facing up and cover it with soil.
.Provide support (optional): Use a trellis to keep climbing vines from touching the ground.
.Irrigation: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, especially during dry periods.
.Fertilize: Apply a balanced fertilizer or compost every few months for healthy growth.
.Pruning: Trim stems for bushier growth and better air circulation to prevent disease.
.Harvest: Collect the young, tender fruits 4-6 months after planting, leaving a little of the stem attached.
.Store: Store harvested chayotes in a cool, dry place for several weeks to months.
