Growing an apricot tree from seeds

By Lesia

Step 1: Seed selection and preparation
Choose seeds: Select seeds from ripe, high-quality apricots.
Clean the seeds: remove the seeds from the fruit and rinse thoroughly to remove the pulp.
Step 2: Stratification (Cold Treatment)
Cold Stratification: Place seeds in a plastic bag with a damp paper towel.
Refrigerate: Store in the refrigerator for 4 to 6 weeks.
Step 3: Germination
Remove from refrigerator: Remove the seeds from the refrigerator.
Prepare the pots: fill the small pots or seedling trays with well-draining potting soil.
Plant seeds: Plant seeds 1 inch deep in potting soil and water thoroughly.
Step 4: Provide optimal conditions
Light and temperature: Place the pots in a sunny location with indirect light. Maintain the temperature around 70°F (21°C).
Watering: Keep the soil constantly moist but not waterlogged.
Step 5: Seedling care
Monitor growth: Monitor germination within a few weeks. Make sure you have enough light and water.
Thinning: Thin the weakest plants if several seeds are planted in the same pot.
Step 6: Transplanting Seedlings
First true leaves: Transplant seedlings into larger pots when they have several sets of true leaves.
Gradual Sunlight: Slowly introduce young plants to more sunlight to prevent sunburn.
Step 7: Outdoor Transplant
Suitable Climate: Transplant outdoors in USDA zones 5-8.
Planting site: Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Plant at the same depth as in the pot.
Step 8: Continuing Care
Watering: Water regularly, keeping the soil moist but not soggy.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced organic fertilizer during the growing season.
Pruning: Prune to remove dead or damaged branches and promote healthy structure.
Pest Control: Monitor for pests and diseases, using organic treatments if necessary.
