garden and ants

In the garden, ants can be considered both  a resource and a threat depending on the circumstances.

On the one hand, ants can be useful in the garden as they help keep things clean by removing dead plant debris and insects, keeping the garden neat and tidy.

Some ant species  can control other harmful insects such as aphids, bacteria and slugs, thus protecting plants from damage.

Additionally, ants can improve soil structure by creating tunnels that help improve air circulation and access to plant roots.

But what happens if, instead of benefiting the plant,  they come into conflict with it  and, together with the aphids, undermine its health?

In fact, we may find ourselves in need of eliminating them, since ants can compete with plants for food,  feeding on the sugary secretions  produced by the roots or flowers of plants.

In fact,  ants can collect seeds and seedlings and remove them from the garden  , preventing germination and plant growth.

Not to mention the damage ants can cause to plant roots, creating galleries and leading to plant death. Ants can  protect and feed harmful insects such as aphids  and ladybirds, allowing them to thrive and cause further damage to plants.

To avoid damage to garden plants, it is important to maintain good ant control, for example by using  physical barriers  or specific insecticides.

Natural products

While you can also purchase commercial insecticide-based products to kill ants, be aware that these can also harm other useful life forms in the garden.

When it comes to nature, using natural substances is the best option. In fact, natural materials such as talcum powder or corn flour can be used to repel ants.

You can also plant repellent herbs such as  mint or garlic around your garden  .

Physical barriers can also help keep them away from our lettuce. We can create a barrier around the plants using a waterproof material, such as beeswax or silicone, to prevent ants from reaching our plants.

You can also  create an attractive area  for ants away from your plants, so they can feed there instead of in the garden.

Especially in the summer months, ants can multiply around plants and interfere with their normal growth.

So if there are aphids and ants, a completely natural remedy that will keep ants away from our garden is corn flour.

You will have to sprinkle the  corn flour around the plants  , the ants will take it to their nest and eat it but they will not be able to digest it.

Also, cornmeal is not dangerous for children or pets, and ants do not like spices, such as cloves  ,  cinnamon, chili powder, and coffee grounds.
