Orchids, the trick to make them last forever: they have never been so lush and strong

By Lesia

Orchids are undoubtedly among the most beautiful and elegant indoor plants. Keeping them beautiful and lush requires careful care, the  use of fertilizers  and the right doses of water and light. Not to mention flowering, which only appears if the plant is in excellent condition. They are not plants for everyone, that’s for sure, but with the right precautions it is possible to make them last a long time. Let’s see how to do it with a  do-it-yourself method.

Orchids, fascinating indoor plants

Until a few years ago,  orchid cultivation  was only for a select few, as the plants were expensive and required a greenhouse.

Over the years,  numerous varieties of orchids have been imported  , even from colder countries, which are therefore very well suited to growing in apartments without the need for specific equipment. This, coupled with hybrid species created by researchers, has made orchids much more popular and less expensive. In fact, orchids are originally tropical plants from Asia and America and can reach heights of up to 60 cm.  Their care does not require daily attention but that does not mean that it is not easy  .

In fact, there are many orchid fertilizers on the market to keep them at their best.
For a more economical solution you can opt for a homemade fertilizer. You will only need one main ingredient: a small potato.

Make an economical and effective fertilizer.

To give your orchids the right vigor   you will only need a small potato (actually you need 20 grams) and a liter of water.

But why a potato?

Perhaps few people know that potatoes are tubers with excellent properties even outside the kitchen. In particular, they are widely used in gardening for their excellent fertilizing properties. For example, potato peelings can be added to ordinary soil as a  natural fertilizer.
Potatoes contain potassium, which helps plants grow strong and lush but, above all, helps them during flowering.

Even  halved potatoes  are often used to create cuttings of other plants such as roses or geraniums, thus acting as a real “incubator” for the development of the cutting’s roots.
But now let’s see how this tuber with numerous properties can help us make our orchids grow luxuriantly.

How to use a potato to make orchid fertilizer.

To make your own  orchid fertilizer,  simply cut 20 grams of potato into pieces, put it in the blender and add a liter of strictly non-calcareous water.

Turn on the blender until you obtain a smooth mixture. Using a strainer, filter the liquid to remove any residue and pour it into a  spray bottle.

Now all you have to do is  spray the mixture generously  on the leaves and roots of your orchids twice a month to help the plant grow stronger and healthier.
