Orchid care tips: How to turn your home into a blooming oasis

By Lesia

Orchids are one of the most popular houseplants cultivated in many households. In addition to their relatively uncomplicated care, they are also suitable for hobby gardeners, and their exotically beautiful flowers add a special touch to any window sill. However, in order for orchids to thrive magnificently, vitally and healthily, they require regular care and fertilization. However, you can easily and practically free produce an ideal fertilizer yourself.

Homemade fertilizer for orchids

Orchids prefer slightly acidic soils, so a homemade fertilizer contains acidic components that balance the pH of the soil. Add a tablespoon of lemon juice to a liter of water. Alternatively, citric acid can be used, with 2 grams per liter of water being sufficient. Stir the mixture well and pour it onto the roots, keeping the leaves dry. Fertilize once a week during the flowering period and once a month.

A garlic broth is also very beneficial as it nourishes the plant well and also has an anti-fungal effect. To do this, cut 3 to 5 garlic cloves into the smallest possible pieces or use a garlic press and pour hot water over them. Leave the mixture to infuse for a day and then filter it. As the broth is very strong, dilute it with water in a ratio of 1:3 and apply it as a poultice every 3-4 weeks.

Ideal conditions for orchids

Orchids come from tropical forests and therefore need high humidity. If your home is rather dry, it is important to spray the plants regularly. Otherwise, they thrive well at normal room temperature and in a constant environment; changing location could have a negative effect on their vitality and appearance. These exotic plants need a lot of light, but not direct sunlight, as their leaves could be damaged. Therefore, choose a bright location with plenty of daylight and, if possible, no drafts. The substrate for orchids should be well-drained and airy so that the roots have enough space. It is therefore advisable to buy a special orchid pot that offers the roots enough space.
