How to Graft a Rose Bush with Different Colored Flowers Step by Step

By Lesia
  • Graft in the summer, when sap flows vigorously and roses grow quickly.
  1. Sanitize Your Tools:
o Clean the knife or pruning shears with alcohol to avoid disease.
  2. Collect Cuttings:
o Cut stems with three buds from the rose bush you want to combine.
o Make the first cut just above the top bud and another cut above the third bud.
  3. Carve a “V” Shape:
o Use a utility knife to carve a “V” shape at the bottom end of the graft.
  4. Select the Rootstock:
o Choose a biennial woody stem from the rootstock rose bush.
o Trim the top and make a one-centimeter-deep cut in the middle of the stem.
  5. Insert the Graft:
o Insert the “V”-shaped graft into the rootstock cut.
o Wrap tightly with grafting tape.
o The graft takes four to six weeks to consolidate.
o Repeat to add more grafts to the rootstock.
    Post-Transplant Care:
  • Water thoroughly and frequently for the first 15 days.
  • Prune the first 2 to 4 shoots from the stem until the plant is stable.
  • Remove the grafting tape when the graft grows independently.
  • Provide a suitable soil mix and compost substrate.
  • Ensure ample space, good airflow, and sufficient sunlight for the roses.
