“10 vegetables to grow at home endlessly”
At a time when awareness is awakening to avoid wasting as much as possible, some simple and fun gestures will allow you to obtain “ homemade ” products that will delight your taste buds, those of your children and will improve your daily life.
Food waste, a source of waste and unnecessary expenses, is also an easy area to act on every day to save money. Stop throwing away leftover vegetables and herbs! In pots, in a planter or directly in the ground, did you know that some fruits and vegetables can grow infinitely ? Gardening friends, here are the easy-to-grow “ food waste ” that you will love to plant!
Here is the list of vegetables to grow at home endlessly:
- Potatoes and Sweet Potatoes Cut a potato into relatively large chunks. Place two toothpicks on each end of the chunk, then place it in a glass of water. (The toothpicks will help keep part of the chunk in the water and part in the air.) Roots will grow into the water and leaves will grow on top. Then, simply transplant the chunk into your garden soil. Helpful Hint: Repeating this process too much can cause them to lose some flavor over time. They will still be edible, though. A clever gardener’s tip: You can also plant the sprouted potato peelings in your small vegetable patch.
- Basil If you save the top of the basil and immerse it in water, roots will start to grow where you cut the plant. After about a week, you will need to plant your aromatic plant in soil (pots or ground), in a sunny spot to revive the branch that you had probably discarded. You will then have beautiful plantings of fresh leaves to flavour your crudités salad, full of freshness for midday!
- Mushrooms To regrow a mushroom, remove its cap and place the stem in a mixture of soil and compost, leaving a small part outside. Keep in mind that regrowing a mushroom can be tricky. You need to keep it in a cool, humid environment without too much light. So be careful to avoid direct sunlight for your mushroom plantations if you want to collect a lot of them!
- Onion and green onions Cut off the root part to leave just one or two centimetres of the bulb. Plant the rest of the onion root side down in the soil while watering it thoroughly. You can also let a green onion cut 10 cm from the roots grow in a large glass of water placed in a sunny spot. Allow it to germinate well before planting.
- Garlic It’s very easy to grow garlic! Plant the remains of garlic cloves in soil that is well exposed to the sun, with the roots pointing downwards. After watering them once a week, a sprout will appear. Simply cut it off to allow the bulb to grow. Then, be patient, as it will take several months before it matures. To speed up the process, place the cloves in a glass with a little water with the pointy part facing upwards. After the sprouts appear, you can plant these bulbs.
- To regrow a leek, simply place the ends of the leek in a glass of water to feed the roots. After changing the water and rinsing the roots once a week, wait for the leek to grow large enough to harvest .
- Celery Place the celery core in a container with a little water in a sunny spot. Wait and enjoy! It’s as simple as that and that’s why it’s one of the easiest vegetables to grow endlessly.
- Romaine Lettuce Save the core of your lettuce and place it in a bowl of water. Change the water regularly and the lettuce will start to make little shoots that will grow into a beautiful, succulent, generous salad.
- Fennel Save the heart of the bulb and place it in a little water on a windowsill. Fennel will quickly grow back. Gardening has never been easier!
- Pineapple Well, it’s certainly not a vegetable… But it’s impossible not to mention it! You’ll need patience to grow a pineapple, but know that it’s totally possible. Simply cut off the leaves and submerge the pineapple in water. Then, once the roots have started to grow, you’ll plant it in the ground and wait about three years before you get a brand new pineapple.
