How to prepare Arabic pita bread

To prepare this delicious recipe, you will need:

Ingredients:

  • 500g common flour
  • 280g warm water
  • 10g salt
  • 10g sugar
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 15g fresh yeast or 5g dry yeast

Preparation:

  1. In a large bowl, mix the flour with the salt and sugar.
  2. Dissolve the yeast in the warm water and add to the bowl along with the olive oil. Mix all the ingredients until you obtain a soft and homogeneous dough.
  3. On a clean, lightly floured surface, knead the dough for about 10 minutes or until it is elastic and does not stick to your hands.
  4. Form the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly greased bowl. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Preheat the oven to 230°C if you choose to bake the pitas. Divide the dough into golf ball-sized portions and shape into balls.
  6. Roll out each ball of dough with a rolling pin until you obtain a circle about 15 cm in diameter and 0.5 cm thick.
  7. To cook in a skillet: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and cook each pita for about 2 minutes on each side, until puffed and lightly browned.
  8. To cook in the oven: Place the rolled pitas on a floured tray or pizza stone and bake for 3-4 minutes or until puffed and lightly browned.
  9. Once cooked, remove the pitas from the oven or pan and let them cool slightly before serving.
  10. Serve the pitas hot or let them cool completely before storing in an airtight container.
