“How to Grow Rice from Store-Bought Rice”

By Lesia

Growing rice in pots can be a rewarding experience, although rice is usually grown in flooded fields. However, with a little extra care, some varieties of rice can thrive in pots. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get started:

Materials Needed:
Rice seeds: Buy rice seeds in store or online. Choose a variety that’s suitable for growing in containers, such as ‘Asian Rice’ or ‘Bomba Rice.’

Large Pots: Use containers that are at least 12 inches deep and wide. Make sure they have drainage holes.
Fertile Soil: Use loamy soil mixed with compost or aged manure for fertility.
Water source: Rice needs continuous watering, so make sure you have a consistent water source.
Sunlight: Choose a sunny location as rice needs plenty of sunlight.

Step-by-step process:
Seed preparation:
Soak the rice seeds in water for 24-48 hours. Change the water several times to encourage germination.
Once the seeds have germinated (small roots are visible), they are ready to plant.
Pot preparation:
Fill the pots with nutrient-rich, loamy soil, leaving about 5 cm of space to the rim to prevent overflow when watering.
Sowing:
Plant the germinated seeds in the soil at a depth of 2-5 cm, leaving a few inches between seeds. Cover them lightly with soil and press gently.
Watering:
Start by keeping the soil constantly moist, but not soggy. Maintain this moisture level throughout the growing cycle. As the plants grow, gradually increase the water level to ensure the soil always remains moist.
Sunlight and temperature:
Place the pots in a sunny location as rice needs plenty of sunlight for healthy growth. The temperature should remain consistently warm (around 21-32°C).
Care:
Fertilize the plants every 3-4 weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer to encourage healthy growth.
Remove weeds that compete with the rice for nutrients and space.
Check regularly for pests and diseases and treat with organic pesticides or fungicides if necessary.
Harvest:
Rice is ready in about 3-6 months, depending on the variety. Harvest when the grains are fully developed and the plants are golden brown.
Cut the stalks and hang them upside down in a dry, well-ventilated place to dry for a few weeks.
Thresh the grains by gently hitting the dry stalks to loosen the rice kernels.
Additional tips:
Choose varieties suitable for growing in pots, as not all rice varieties grow well in pots.
Ensure good drainage in pots to avoid waterlogging.
Maintain a consistent water level to mimic the conditions of flooded fields that rice typically requires.
Protect the plants from strong winds that could damage or uproot them.
Growing rice in pots may not be as productive as growing it in the field, but it can be a fascinating and educational experience. Experimenting with different varieties and adjusting growing conditions can increase your success in this endeavor.
