8 Good Reasons to Stop Throwing Away Your Eggshells

Welcome Tips 8 Good Reasons to Stop Throwing Away Your Eggshells

When we make a recipe, we break eggs and throw away the shells. We think that the life of the shell ends there… And yet, it’s a shame, because the shells are composed of 95% calcium carbonate! It’s therefore not surprising that they strengthen our bones and protect the enamel of our teeth. What if we reused the shells, rather than throwing them away?

1 – A VERY EFFECTIVE FERTILIZER

If your garden is not very fertile, this element is the solution to grow your plants in abundance. To do this, you must put the eggshell powder in a hole to enrich the soil of your garden with nutrients. Then, you will only have to grow your plants there. Eggshells are completely biodegradable and contain organic matter such as phosphorus, calcium or magnesium. A winning cocktail for those who have a green thumb!

2 – TO FEED YOUR CHICKENS

If you want your chickens to produce healthy, hard-boiled eggs, all you need to do is allow them to peck at eggshells! They need a lot of calcium. So if you notice your chickens eating their own eggs, it could be because of a vitamin deficiency. Dry the shells at room temperature and, when you have collected enough, crush them slightly and place them on a baking tray. Bake them in the oven at 140°C for about ten minutes. Once cooled, give a small amount of this powder to your chickens. Some do not like this method, it is up to you to make up your own mind.

3 – FOR YOUR PVC GARDEN FURNITURE

Although PVC is resistant, it is still susceptible to stains and other dirt that can make it lose its shine, especially if it is outdoors, as is the case with garden furniture. So clean your chairs, tables and any other outdoor furniture with egg whites that you spread in small layers before letting dry.

4 – CLEANSE THE SKIN WITH EGG SHELLS

Place an eggshell in a small container of apple cider vinegar and let it soak for a few days. Dab the mixture on minor skin irritations or itchy areas of the skin.

5 – KEEP CATS AWAY FROM THE GARDEN

Cats can damage the plants in your garden. We recommend using eggshells which will be effective in keeping cats away. Simply crush them roughly and place them under the plants, so cats will no longer venture into the garden.

6 – BLEACHING CLOTHES

Combine well-crushed shells with lemon slices in a cloth bag and place in your washing machine.

7 – REMOVE THE OVEN PLATES

Can’t seem to get rid of the burnt-on streaks on your baking trays? Here’s a homemade abrasive made from eggshells that should help you get rid of these residues naturally: mix eggshell powder with soap and scrub! Soon your baking trays will be (almost) like new again thanks to this natural solution.

8 – CLEAN YOUR SINKS

Dry and pulverize the shells and sprinkle a quarter teaspoon of this powder in the kitchen sink after cleaning the dishes. The abrasive egg powder clings to food bits in your pipes and turns into little scrubbers as they move through the pipes. This will help reduce buildup in your plumbing.
