How to clean and polish marble with natural products?

By Lesia

Noble, refined, elegant… Marble is a material that brings a chic and luxurious touch to our living spaces. Only problem: although it is hard and resistant, it remains a very delicate material whose maintenance is particularly laborious. Always be very careful not to damage it or tarnish it. Ideally, natural, gentle and ecological remedies are always less aggressive to clean marble. The first thing to remember: always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Because, to make it shine, some natural ingredients are not suitable.

There are therefore many natural alternatives with which you can clean and polish your marble surfaces at home. But before starting with the cleaning, it is very important to make a selection to know exactly which products are best suited for its maintenance. It is absolutely necessary to avoid some mistakes. Know, for example, that marble does not withstand too much water: therefore, remember to quickly dry the surface before unsightly and difficult-to-remove marks form.

Now let’s find out how to clean marble in a simple and effective way!

What you should not use on marble
Marble is a stone that beautifies and gives a lot of style to surfaces and elements of the house. But, because it remains very fragile and sensitive, this material does not withstand the stripping acidity of certain cleaning products.

Before you begin, from the floor to the counter, it is important to know which products you should absolutely not use on your marble surfaces so as not to denature the stone.

Do not use natural products such as vinegar on marble, whether it is white vinegar or apple cider. You should also avoid using citric acid, lemon, as well as bleach. The same goes for descaling and chemical products.

To preserve the shine of marble, always dry the surface as soon as possible so that it does not absorb stains, especially those from vinegar, orange or lemon juice. The same goes for drinks or foods that stain objects, such as wine, tea or certain spices such as curry.

As for cleaning, never rub marble with abrasive sponges, but soft ones. Always prefer soft, clean microfibre cloths. Remember to rub gently with light circular movements to avoid scratching the surfaces. As a precaution, it is best to start by cleaning a small area to see the reaction before starting deep cleaning.

removing stains
We are mainly talking about the grease stains that can be found on marble surfaces.

It is advisable to always act quickly to avoid the formation of persistent stains.

To remove all traces of grease from marble, prepare a mixture of equal parts baking soda and cornstarch and apply it gently to the stains. Do not rub, use gentle movements and remove the excess. You can also use potato starch.

Baking soda has a gentle stain-removing and exfoliating action, very suitable for this type of material. On the other hand, cornstarch has a powerful absorption capacity.

English:Note: If you have no other option, you can use white vinegar, as long as you dilute it properly in a large bucket of water. It can help you remove some stains. But don’t let it sit for too long, rinse the solution off quickly enough.

removing dust
Dust quickly accumulates on marble and causes it to lose its aesthetics. There are several different methods to remove it effectively. For marble, it is best to use a microfiber cloth. Simply moisten this soft cloth with some warm water and wipe off the dust, then quickly dry and wipe the surface. The cleanliness will be there!
