It blooms like a fern, only once a year. Cultivation and requirements of Gymnocalycium mihanovichii
Characteristics of Gymnocalycium mihanovichii:
- It is a cactus from the Gymnocalycium family, native to South America, specifically Paraguay.
- It grows slowly, reaching about 4 cm in height and 6 cm in diameter.
- It has a spherical and thick body, dark green in color with eight lighter triangular ribs and protuberances with white halos and hooked spines.
- It blooms once a year with large, bell-shaped flowers.
Growing and care of Gymnocalycium mihanovichii:
- It should be placed in a place with indirect light, such as an eastern or western windowsill.
- Avoid direct sunlight that can cause burns to its shoots.
- Water abundantly and allow the soil to dry completely between waterings.
- In summer, it may need more frequent watering due to high temperatures.
- Use cold, stagnant water to avoid problems due to excess calcium.
- Fertilize every 30 days with liquid fertilizer for cacti and succulents during the summer.
- Transplant every 2-3 years to a light, permeable substrate to avoid excess moisture.
- It can be propagated by grafting onto rootstocks such as hylocereus or by seeds, although the latter method is slower.
- It does not require pruning, only regular removal of inflorescences and dried fruits.
- Be careful with diseases such as fungal rot, caused by excessive watering or fertilization.
