How to Make Homemade Liquid Soap with Only Three Items

By Lesia

Making homemade liquid soap with just three items is indeed possible! Here’s a simple recipe using castile soap, water, and a thickening agent:

Ingredients:

  1. Castile Soap: This is a vegetable oil-based soap, typically made from olive oil. It’s gentle and versatile.
  2. Water: Distilled or filtered water is best to avoid mineral buildup.
  3. Thickening Agent (Optional, but Recommended):
    • Glycerin: Adds thickness and moisturizing properties.
    • Xanthan Gum: A natural thickener that works well.
    • Cornstarch: A common household thickener.

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Castile Soap Base:
    • If using a castile soap bar, grate it finely. If using liquid castile soap, proceed to the next step.
    • Heat water in a saucepan over medium heat. Do not boil.
    • Add the grated castile soap to the warm water and stir until it dissolves completely.
    • If you are using liquid castile soap, warm the water, then slowly combine the liquid soap and water together.
  2. Add the Thickening Agent (Optional):
    • Glycerin: Add a small amount of vegetable glycerin (start with a tablespoon) to the warm soap mixture and stir well. Add more until you reach your desired consistency.
    • Xanthan Gum: In a separate small bowl, combine a very small amount of xanthan gum (start with 1/4 teaspoon) with a tablespoon of warm water, and blend vigorously with a whisk or immersion blender to prevent clumps. Then add this mixture to the warm soap mixture, and stir until completely combined. Add more if needed.
    • Cornstarch: Make a slurry by mixing a tablespoon of cornstarch with a small amount of cold water. Slowly add the slurry to the warm soap mixture, stirring constantly. Heat until the mixture thickens slightly. Be careful to not overheat, or it could become overly thick.
  3. Cool and Store:
    • Remove the soap mixture from the heat and let it cool completely. It will thicken as it cools.
    • Once cooled, pour the liquid soap into a clean, airtight container (a pump bottle is ideal).

Optional Additions:

  • Essential Oils: Add a few drops of your favorite essential oils for fragrance and added benefits (e.g., lavender, tea tree, lemon).
  • Vitamin E Oil: A small amount of vitamin E oil can add moisturizing properties.

Tips and Considerations:

  • Consistency: The thickness of your soap will depend on the amount of thickening agent you use. Start with a small amount and add more as needed.
  • Testing: Test a small batch first to ensure you like the consistency and scent.
  • Storage: Store your homemade liquid soap in a cool, dry place.
  • Separation: Natural soaps may separate over time. Simply shake the bottle before use.
  • Shelf Life: Homemade soap without preservatives has a shorter shelf life than commercial soaps. Use it within a few weeks.
  • pH: Castile soap is naturally alkaline. You may want to test the pH and adjust it if necessary.

By following these simple steps, you can create your own gentle and natural liquid soap!
