By Lesia

Disinfecting a solarium, whether it’s a tanning bed or a sunroom, requires careful attention to hygiene. Here’s a guide focusing on natural solutions and essential steps, keeping in mind the need for thoroughness:

General Principles:

  • Ventilation: Always ensure good ventilation during and after cleaning. Open windows and doors to allow fresh air to circulate.
  • Safety: Wear gloves to protect your skin, especially when using any cleaning solutions.
  • Thoroughness: Pay attention to all surfaces, including those that are frequently touched.

Natural Disinfecting Solutions:

  1. Vinegar:
    • White vinegar is a natural disinfectant that can kill many germs and mold.
    • Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle.
    • Spray the solution onto surfaces and let it sit for several minutes before wiping it clean with a damp cloth.
    • Vinegar is excellent for cleaning glass surfaces.
  2. Hydrogen Peroxide:
    • Hydrogen peroxide is another effective disinfectant.
    • Use a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution.
    • Spray it onto surfaces and let it sit for several minutes before wiping it clean.
    • Hydrogen peroxide is good for disinfecting hard surfaces.
  3. Tea Tree Oil:
    • Tea tree oil has natural antifungal and antibacterial properties.
    • Mix a few drops of tea tree oil with water in a spray bottle.
    • Spray the solution onto surfaces and wipe them clean.
    • Be mindful that tea tree oil has a strong scent.
  4. Baking Soda:
    • Baking soda is better for cleaning and deodorizing, but it does add to the cleaning process.
    • It is very good for scrubbing surfaces.
    • Make a paste with water, and use it to scrub tough stains.

Essential Steps:

  1. Remove Debris:
    • Start by removing any loose debris, such as dust, dirt, or leaves.
    • Vacuum or sweep the solarium thoroughly.
  2. Clean Surfaces:
    • Wipe down all surfaces with your chosen natural disinfectant solution.
    • Pay special attention to:
      • Glass surfaces
      • Frames and supports
      • Any seating or furniture
      • Any frequently touched surfaces.
  3. Address Mold or Mildew:
    • If you see any mold or mildew, use a stronger solution, such as a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution.
    • Scrub the affected areas thoroughly.
  4. Ventilate:
    • After cleaning, ensure the solarium is well-ventilated to allow the surfaces to dry completely.
  5. Clean Fabrics:
    • If there are any fabrics within the solarium, such as chair cushions, clean those according to the fabric type.
    • Many fabrics can be cleaned with a solution of mild soap and water.

Important Considerations for Tanning Solariums:

  • If you are cleaning a tanning bed, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and disinfecting.
  • Use disinfectants that are specifically designed for acrylic surfaces, as some cleaning products can damage them.
  • Always ensure that any cleaning product used, is fully removed from the tanning surfaces, before use.

By following these steps, you can effectively disinfect your solarium and create a clean and healthy environment.
