The trick to eliminating all bad smells from your washing machine: you only need one kitchen product 💪

By Lesia

The kitchen product that’s often touted as a miracle worker for eliminating bad smells from washing machines is white vinegar. Here’s how to use it:

The White Vinegar Method:

  1. Empty the Washing Machine: Ensure there are no clothes or other items inside.
  2. Add White Vinegar: Pour about 2 cups of white vinegar directly into the washing machine drum.
  3. Run a Hot Water Cycle: Run a hot water cycle (the hottest setting your machine offers).
  4. Optional: Add Baking Soda: For extra cleaning power, you can add 1/2 cup of baking soda directly to the drum after the vinegar cycle has finished. Then, run another hot water rinse cycle.
  5. Wipe Down the Door and Seals: After the cycle is complete, wipe down the washing machine door, the rubber gasket (seal), and any other accessible surfaces with a clean cloth.
  6. Leave the Door Open: Leave the washing machine door open to allow it to air dry completely. This helps prevent moisture buildup, which can contribute to odors.

Why This Works:

  • Vinegar’s Acidity: White vinegar is a mild acid that helps neutralize odors, break down soap scum, and dissolve mineral deposits.
  • Disinfecting Properties: Vinegar also has some disinfecting properties, which can help kill bacteria and mold that contribute to bad smells.
  • Baking Soda’s Deodorizing Power: Baking soda is a natural deodorizer that can help absorb and neutralize odors.

Additional Tips:

  • Regular Cleaning: To prevent bad smells from developing, clean your washing machine regularly (about once a month).
  • Detergent Usage: Use the correct amount of detergent. Excessive detergent can lead to buildup and odors.
  • Leave the Door Open: Always leave the washing machine door open after use to allow it to air dry.
  • Clean the Detergent Dispenser: Regularly clean the detergent dispenser drawer to remove any buildup.
  • Check the Drain Hose: Ensure the drain hose is not clogged or kinked, as this can lead to water buildup and odors.
  • Inspect the Rubber Gasket: Regularly inspect the rubber gasket for mold or mildew growth. If necessary, clean it with a solution of bleach and water (use with caution and ensure proper ventilation).
  • Consider a Washing Machine Cleaner: There are commercial washing machine cleaners that can be used. Follow the instructions on the product label.

By following these tips, you can keep your washing machine smelling fresh and clean.
