Gas stoves, 1 tablespoon and you’ll have them shining again: this is what you should do

By Lesia

Keeping gas stove burners clean and shiny can be a bit of a chore, but there’s a simple method using a common household ingredient that often works wonders. The “1 tablespoon” likely refers to using baking soda. Here’s how to do it:

Materials:

  • Baking soda
  • Warm water
  • Dish soap (optional, for heavily soiled burners)
  • A non-abrasive sponge or cloth
  • A soft toothbrush (optional, for stubborn spots)

Instructions:

  1. Remove the Burner Caps and Grates:
    • Let the burners cool completely before handling them.
    • Carefully remove the burner caps and grates from the stove.
  2. Prepare the Baking Soda Paste:
    • In a bowl, mix baking soda with warm water to create a thick paste.
    • If the burners are heavily soiled, you can add a few drops of dish soap to the paste.
  3. Apply the Paste:
    • Apply the baking soda paste generously to the burner caps and grates.
    • For stubborn stains, let the paste sit for 15-20 minutes.
  4. Scrub Gently:
    • Use a non-abrasive sponge or cloth to scrub the burners.
    • For hard-to-reach areas or stubborn spots, use a soft toothbrush.
    • Be gentle to avoid scratching the burner surfaces.
  5. Rinse Thoroughly:
    • Rinse the burner caps and grates with warm water to remove all traces of baking soda.
    • Ensure they are completely clean.
  6. Dry Completely:
    • Dry the burner caps and grates thoroughly with a clean cloth.
    • Make sure they are completely dry before placing them back on the stove.
  7. Reassemble:
    • Carefully place the dry burner caps and grates back onto the stove.

Why Baking Soda Works:

  • Baking soda is a mild abrasive that helps to loosen and remove grease and grime.
  • It’s also a natural deodorizer, so it can help to eliminate any lingering odors.
  • It is a basic substance, and many kitchen messes are acidic, so it is a good neutralizer.

Important Considerations:

  • Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the burner surfaces.
  • Always ensure the burners are completely cool before cleaning them.
  • If your burners have any specific cleaning instructions from the manufacturer, follow those guidelines.
  • For heavily soiled burners, soaking the burner components in hot soapy water for a while before using the baking soda paste can be helpful.
