An effective way to propagate roses, for which you will need a head of red onion

By Lesia

Using a red onion to propagate roses is a somewhat unconventional but surprisingly effective method. The onion acts as a natural rooting hormone and fungicide, promoting root growth and preventing rot. Here’s how it works:

Materials:

  • Healthy rose cuttings (about 6-8 inches long)
  • A large red onion
  • Potting soil
  • Plastic cups or small pots
  • Rooting hormone (optional, but can increase success rate)
  • A sharp knife or pruning shears

Steps:

  1. Prepare the Rose Cuttings:
    • Choose healthy rose stems.
    • Cut the stems at a 45-degree angle just below a node (where a leaf grows).
    • Remove the lower leaves, leaving a few leaves at the top.
    • If using rooting hormone, dip the cut end of the rose cutting into it.
  2. Prepare the Red Onion:
    • Cut the red onion in half.
    • Using a knife or spoon, carefully hollow out the center of each onion half, creating a space for the rose cutting.
  3. Plant the Cuttings:
    • Insert the cut end of the rose cutting into the hollowed-out center of the red onion.
    • The onion will hold the cutting upright and provide nutrients.
  4. Prepare the Pots:
    • Fill the plastic cups or small pots with potting soil.
    • Make a hole in the center of the soil.
  5. Plant the Onion and Cutting:
    • Carefully place the onion (with the rose cutting inside) into the hole in the potting soil.
    • Make sure the cutting is upright and the onion is mostly buried.
    • Gently firm the soil around the onion.
  6. Water and Care:
    • Water the cuttings thoroughly.
    • Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
    • Place the pots in a warm, bright location with indirect sunlight.
    • You can cover the pots with a clear plastic bag or wrap to create a mini-greenhouse effect and increase humidity. But ensure that there is some air flow to prevent mold.
  7. Root Development:
    • Roots should begin to develop within a few weeks.
    • You can gently check for root growth by carefully tugging on the cutting. If it resists, roots have likely formed.
    • When the roots have well established, the plant can be transplanted into a larger pot, or into a garden.

Why It Works:

  • Onion’s Natural Properties:
    • Red onions contain natural rooting hormones that stimulate root growth.
    • They also have antifungal properties that help prevent rot.
    • The onion provides some nutrients to the cutting.

Tips for Success:

  • Use healthy rose cuttings.
  • Ensure the onion is fresh and firm.
  • Maintain consistent moisture in the soil.
  • Provide adequate light.
  • Avoid overwatering.

This method is a simple and effective way to propagate roses, and the red onion provides a natural boost to the rooting process.Джерела й пов’язаний контент
