Homemade churros: the simple recipe for a popular dessert
Ingredients
FOR THE CHURRO
1 cup WATER
1/4 cup BUTTER, CUT INTO CUBES
1 tablespoon POWDERED SUGAR
1/4 teaspoon SALT
1 cup ALL PURPOSE FLOUR
1 BIG EGG
1/2 teaspoon PURE VANILLA EXTRACT
ANY VEGETABLE OIL, FOR FRYING
FOR COATING
1/2 cup POWDERED SUGAR
3/4 teaspoon of GROUND CINNAMON
Preparation
Combine sugar and cinnamon in a shallow bowl and set aside.
In a deep skillet, heat 1 ½ inches of oil until it reads 360˚F on a thermometer.
Bring water, butter, sugar and salt to a boil in a saucepan over medium-high heat.
Reduce heat to medium-low and stir in flour.
Stir constantly until dough forms. Pour dough into a bowl and let cool slightly.
Stir in egg and vanilla.
Mix with a hand mixer.
Pour the dough into a pastry bag. Pipe dough directly into oil in 5- to 6-inch segments. Cut dough with scissors or sharp knife to form individual churros.
Fry for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
Remove from oil and drain on a paper towel.
Roll churros in cinnamon-sugar mixture. Repeat until all batter has been fried.
Serve immediately.
