How to Get Rid of Fruit and Drain Flies?
Summer and winter, they are always there, as soon as a fruit is damaged in your basket. Midges are small and almost invisible, but can quickly ruin our lives by hovering around the kitchen all the time!
1 – THE FUNNEL
This is the method I have used for years. She traps them without drowning them, for those who have a sensitive soul and would like to release them afterwards. Here’s how we do it. You first need a transparent container: it can be plastic, but I find that the glass containers in which you buy salsa or other such condiments are perfect for this use. All year round I wash them and store them in anticipation of fruit fly season. And since they are recovered, I don’t really mind throwing them away afterwards. You then need a piece of ripe banana, a sheet of paper, and some sticky paper.
- Place the end of the banana in the container.
- Form a cone/funnel with the sheet of paper. The hole at the bottom should be tiny: flies should be able to get in, but not get out.
- Glue the funnel with tape to hold it in place.
- Then place the funnel so that it rests on the edge of the container, and place sticky paper all over the edge to prevent flies from getting out.
- You must then place the trap on the counter. In my case, it’s almost magic. In just a few hours all the flies are inside. It’s both fascinating and a little disgusting to watch. You will need to replace the trap approximately every 3 days.
- Result: by far the thing that works best! You may need 2 in a kitchen for maximum efficiency.
2 – FRUIT FLY: SIMPLE ACTION TO AVOID IT
- To avoid fruit flies and drain flies, adopt simple actions that will prevent an invasion in the kitchen.
- Once you return from the market or supermarket, remember to wash and dry your fruits and vegetables before putting them in a basket or bin.
- Empty your trash regularly, especially in summer, when the heat attracts fruit flies more.
- When recycling, make sure your containers and cans are rinsed well before being thrown away.
- Wash and clean your vegetable and fruit drawers regularly to prevent food residue from settling there.
