4 Grandma’s Tips to Relieve a Sprained Ankle

By liliaturcin5

Particularly painful, a sprain is a joint trauma caused by a sudden twist or stretch. Here are some natural remedies and grandmother’s secrets to adopt in case of a sprained ankle

1 – ICE

  • Applying ice to a sprained ankle can greatly help reduce swelling, inflammation, and pain. Ice prevents ligaments from becoming inflamed and stops any bleeding from a torn ligament. Ice should be applied to the affected area for 48 to 72 hours after the injury.
  • Wrap about a cup of ice cubes in a towel. Apply the compress to the injured area for 15 to 20 minutes. Repeat the process every two to three hours.
  • If ice is not readily available, you can use a package of frozen vegetables.
  • Note: Never put ice directly on the skin as this may damage it.

2 – TURMERIC

This common spice is an excellent pain reliever due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric, which is also an antispasmodic, relaxes muscles, tissues and joints and helps reduce swelling and pain.

Instructions

  1. Mix two tablespoons of turmeric powder, one tablespoon of lime juice and a little warm water to make a thick paste.
  2. Apply the paste to the sprained ankle, then wrap it with a bandage.
  3. Leave it for 10 hours.
  4. Repeat every 10 hours and continue this treatment for a week.
  5. In case of severe pain, add a teaspoon of turmeric powder to a glass of lukewarm milk. Drink this twice a day for a week.

3 – APPLY A GREEN CLAY POTATO TO DEFLATE

Why does it help? “It’s an effective old grandmother’s remedy, because green clay has anti-inflammatory properties,”  notes Benjamin Dubois-Grillot. Clay can be used alternately with cold, because the duration of action of the poultice is longer.

How to do ? The most practical: buy green clay paste sold in tubes in pharmacies or drugstores. Alternatively, you can use powdered green clay and gradually mix it with water at room temperature until you obtain a paste.

“You must apply it as a very thick poultice on the instep or knee and surround it with cling film to hold it in place. Be careful not to tighten too much so as not to cut off circulation! », warns the physiotherapist.

Leave the poultice on for at least an hour before rinsing. Repeat if pain and swelling reappear, even several times a day.

4 – GARLIC

Garlic can also be used to quickly relieve various symptoms of a sprain. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, garlic can help reduce pain and inflammation.

Additionally, its healing properties and ability to increase the body’s strength and energy will speed up the healing process.

Instructions

  1. Mix one tablespoon of garlic juice and two tablespoons of warm coconut oil.
  2. Gently rub this solution on the affected area.
  3. Leave it on for half an hour, then wash the area with lukewarm water.
