8 Natural Tips to Drive Away Flies Permanently
When flies and midges arrive at your home, your cozy little nest turns into a nightmare! Haro on the chemical bomb. We give you our alternative methods to put an end to flying insects.
1 – WHITE VINEGAR
Instead of killing them with a swatter or cloth, you can opt for white vinegar. Indeed, in addition to being effective for cleaning almost all surfaces in the house, this cleaning product is a great ally for chasing away Diptera, moreover at a lower cost. And for good reason, it gives off a strong odor which bothers them. To keep these unwanted insects away, spray white vinegar on your doors and windows.
2 – GARLIC
Insects, especially flies, do not like the strong smell of garlic. All you need to do is make a garlic decoction and scatter the solution on the edge of your windows.
3 – CLOVES
Flies don’t like the smell of cloves. Cut citrus fruits in half or quarters, such as lemons, clementines, grapefruit or oranges. Plant a few cloves in it and spread them around your house, preferably near windows and doors, and replace them every week. This way, you will enjoy the good smell of this mixture while repelling flies out of your home.
4 – LAVENDER
If, like flies, you don’t like the smell of garlic, choose lavender to repel them. Flies can’t stand this smell. In the form of lavender essential oil, in small sachets, in dried bouquets, in pots… it’s whatever you want.
It’s beautiful, it smells good and it makes you (almost) feel like you’re on vacation.
5 – BASIL
Real repellents, basil plants are good allies for effectively getting rid of flies. If they give off a pleasant odor for us, on the contrary, they blow their nose and fear it! So place a plant on the edge of the window or directly in frequently used rooms and see the number of flies decrease significantly.
6 – APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
Its pungent odor is considered very annoying by flies, which will stay away from it. Mix 120ml of apple cider vinegar with 125ml of water and spray the solution at fly entry points, such as windows or balconies.
7 – THE ONION
Just like the previous elements, the onion can prove valuable in combating the invasion of flies. Sliced or in decoctions, onions can be placed on top of cabinets or on window sills. They can also be rubbed on the edges of the frames, on the outside, to discourage intruders from entering.
8 – MILK, SUGAR, PEPPER: A FRUIT FLY TRAP
If you are bothered by fruit flies a lot, here is an old recipe for a sweet milky trap for them. This method was once used in England. As sugary substances attract fruit flies, this is the main idea of this fly trap.
Ingredients
- ½ liter of milk
- ¼ cup sugar
- Black pepper – 4 tablespoons
Instructions
- Pour the milk into a saucepan. Add the sugar and pepper.
- Let the solution steep for 10-15 minutes.
- Take a few shallow dishes like soup plates and pour some of this solution into each one.
- Place these plates all around your house, especially where flies come most of the time.
Flies will be attracted to this solution and when they get close to it, they will suffocate and drown.
