3 Technique to Recognize if an Egg is Fresh or Rotten

By liliaturcin5

Once expired, eggs smell very bad and become unfit for consumption. However, it is difficult to know when you can no longer eat them. Indeed, the use-by date (DLC) or expiry date are certainly a valuable indication.

1 – THE SMELL TEST TO KNOW IF AN EGG IS STILL GOOD

This method is a classic and requires no equipment other than a nose that can smell odors (a technique that is not effective on a blocked nose day). Smell the egg for the characteristic sulfur smell of rotten eggs. If you don’t feel anything, it means there is no risk. It can be eaten!

If you are still in doubt, break the shell to collect the egg on a dish or in a bowl and sniff it. If you don’t smell anything, it’s okay. Otherwise, throw it away.

2 – WE RELY ON THE NOISE

Put an egg near your ear, shake it and listen carefully. If you don’t hear anything, everything is fine. You have a hard-boiled egg, fried egg, poached egg or scrambled egg without risk to your health! If, on the contrary, you hear a sound of liquid sloshing, this is not a good sign. It will be better to avoid eating it. The limit of use is surely well exceeded, whatever the label mentioning optimal use says…

3 – DIVING INTO WATER

It’s a technique that has always been known and is so formidable that no egg can lie to it. Prepare a large container of fresh water, and boom! Immerse the egg and observe its reaction:

  • It flows directly: it is fresh and can be consumed without problem.
  • It floats hopelessly to the surface: it clearly tells you that you have forgotten it and that it is better to avoid eating it.
  • It flows, but takes its time: it is still possible to use it in a preparation with cooking, but you must avoid consuming it raw.
  • On the other hand, you can safely put it in a cake or an omelette.
