How to remove the white patina from glasses and make them shine again
Over time, glass glasses acquire a cloudy hue or whitish stains due to the limescale present in the water. The first option is to discard them, stop using them or throw them away, but it doesn’t have to be that way.
Before buying new glasses, try removing the white patina and returning them to their original shine with the economical and ecological methods we suggest below.
Although the presence of limescale in the water we use to wash glasses is the main cause of the formation of this white film , there are other factors that can cause it, such as incorrect use of the dishwasher or excessive use of dish detergent.
1. Salt and lemon
Rub the inside of the glass with half a lemon. Apply a little force, but be careful not to break the glass. Little by little the lemon will eliminate the limescale present inside the glass.
Immediately afterwards, put a pinch of salt in the glass and spread it over the entire internal surface. Rub again with lemon to ensure that all the limescale comes away. Once you’re done, wash the glass with water and a little dish soap and dry well.
2. Baking soda
Pour two generous tablespoons of baking soda, a tablespoon of salt and some hot water into the glass. Leave it to act for about 30 minutes.
This combination will eliminate the limescale deposited on the glass. Remember to wash the glass with detergent and water before drying and storing it.
3. White vinegar
Another simple and effective option for removing limescale is a solution of white vinegar and water.
Fill a container with two equal parts of vinegar and water, then immerse the glasses in it and leave them to soak for a couple of hours. You can even leave the glasses overnight if necessary.
Finally, rinse and wash the glasses, then dry them well before storing them.
4. Toothpaste
Put a little toothpaste inside the glass, distributing it over the entire surface. After a couple of minutes, rinse the glass well with water and detergent, dry well and store.
If none of the solutions to remove the white film from glasses have worked, the problem probably cannot be solved and in this case the only option is to replace them with new glasses.
